The Swim
by Bonnie Karas

Swimming is a skill sport, just like tennis or golf as quoted by Joe Friel, author of The Triathlete's Training Bible. Make the time in the off-season to learn body alignment, proper breathing and arm position. Time and patience in working the following drills will pay huge dividends next season!

1. Hide your Head: Lead with the top of your head and not your forehead. Look at the pool bottom and not in front of you. (Watch out for the WALL!)

2. Swim Downhill: Proper balance and feeling supported by the water makes for efficient swimming. Leaning on your chest will help bring your hips and legs to the surface.

3. Lengthen the Body: Reach for the wall. A longer body line reduces drag and allows you to swim easier. Slip your arm in the water like your sliding it into a jacket sleeve and extend until your shoulder touches your jaw.
