The 2nd Annual
Run/Fitness Program came to a successful conclusion on June
2, 2007, with 15 kids from the Boys and Girls Club of South
Oakland County running the 2 Mile race at the Oak Apple Run.
The kids were part of a 6-week program put
on by Team Mongo that included weekly training and exercise,
stretching, nutritional discussions, and mentoring. Prior
to the final event, the kids received new running shoes donated
by Hanson's Running Shop in Royal Oak and running shirts
donated by Team Mongo. It was truly a collaborative effort,
all to benefit the kids.
Brett Tillander, Executive Director of the
Boys & Girls Club of South Oakland County was amazed with
what was accomplished. "In my years at
the Boys & Girls
Club I have learned that we change a Club member’s
life an experience at a time. The
level and timing of the transformation that can occur is
a variable. In one instance you can see a kid truly
change before your eyes, in another instance it may take
several years and the efforts show up down the road in significant
ways. I have witnessed up close and personal the impact of
your efforts over these past few years. From the shoes to the
shirts, from the coaching to the prodding, you helped these
Club members learn something about themselves. You
also gave them a gift – they learned that if they work
hard enough they can finish the race. And finishing
the race with friends supporting you along the way is even
better." said Brett.
Next year, the Run/Fitness Program is expected
to be bigger and stronger than ever.
